The warmer summer weather is almost upon us, and that can only mean one thing: it’s time to prepare your sports boat for the water. A season of summer fun is about to begin, and all that’s left to do is take a few pre-launch steps to ensure everything is in tip-top shape.
Whether you own a Nor-tech, Nitra, or another sports boat, start ticking these tasks off your to-do list:
1. Perform a Mechanical and Systems Check
While reliability is one of the many benefits of purchasing a quality sports boat such as a Nor-Tech or Nitra, you still need to perform essential maintenance. A mechanical and systems check is integral to safe travel.
Inspect the engines and drive systems, paying particular attention to the oil, coolant, and hydraulic fluid levels. Inspect the hoses, belts, and fittings for any signs of wear or leaks. Don’t forget to start the engines briefly to ensure adequate fuel flow and confirm that it idles.
Charge the batteries and make sure the terminals are clean and secure. Finally, check the fuel system for leaks or cracked lines. Get ready for fun on the water by filling the tank with the most suitable fuel.
2. Check Electrical and Navigation Equipment
Test all the electrical and navigational equipment you’ll be relying on when you head out on the water this summer, including the GPS, chart plotter, depth finder, radar, and VHF radio. Checking the bilge pumps, horn, and navigation lights is also important.
3. Prepare Safety and Emergency Equipment
While you hope never to need your safety and emergency equipment, check it’s all there and in excellent condition. There should be at least one U.S. Coast Guard-approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD) for every passenger. Ensure there is at least one approved extinguisher that is charged and within its expiration date.
Check the expiration dates on your visual distress signals and ensure you have sound-producing devices, such as an air horn and whistle. Finally, ensure that your first aid kit and tool kit are fully stocked with essentials.
4. Inspect the Trailer and Launch Equipment
It’s not just your Nitra or Nor-Tech sports boat that you need to inspect for your next summer outing. You also need to ensure your trailer and launch equipment are ready! Check brakes, lights, wheel bearings, and tire pressure. Ensure the safety chain and winch strap are in excellent condition.
When securing your boat for transit, check the cover, bow strap, and transom straps. Remove engine supports and travel blocks. If your sports boat has a carbon or Kevlar hull, inspect the hull and chines for stress marks from trailering or dock rash before and after your trip.
5. Thoroughly Plan Your Trip
With your Nor-Tech or Nitra boat in tip-top shape for hitting the water, it’s time to plan the other parts of your trip. File a float plan and share your itinerary, launch point, and return time with someone remaining onshore.
Before setting off, perform a weather check, but use marine weather apps or VHF forecasts rather than traditional weather apps. Avoid traveling out in high winds or low visibility conditions.
Finally, be aware of your fuel requirements and fuel consumption during cruising. This is particularly important for high-performance boats, such as the Nor-Tech 450 and Nitra 29. If your range is limited based on your travel plans, consider carrying extra fuel.
6. Perform a Final Walkaround
Don’t hit the water without performing at least one more final walkaround. This is your opportunity to perform triple checks before launch, such as ensuring the drain plug is installed, securing all compartments and doors, and verifying temperatures, alarms, and oil pressure. It’s also important to review any preset throttle curves or drive trim settings.
If you’re planning a particularly long trip, start with a short local run to ensure your sports boat’s responsiveness and engine sync.
